How does Mobile ID work?

Mobile Id is like a virtual card.

Mobile IDs are used as an alternative for physical smart cards in Physical Access Control Systems ( PACS).

Mobile IDs are generated in the cloud service and transferred to users' mobile phones. Users can authenticate themselves at access control readers by using the phone’s NFC or Bluetooth connection.

The phone application authenticates with the an access control reader and then delivers the id via the access control reder to the to an access control terminal at the door.

The terminal makes the decision on granting the access for the user and upon any further actions.

The Mobile ID system builds on the components below:

Mobile IDs

Stored in the users' mobile phones, Mobile IDs are only used for authentication. The Mobile IDs are authenticated by an access control reader, which delivers the IDs further to an access controller. The access controller makes the decision on granting the access and on further actions.

Mobile application

The mobile application stores the Mobile IDs onto a secure storage on the phone.

The Mobile ID system builds on the components below:

  • Mobile IDs

Stored in the users' mobile phones, Mobile IDs are only used for authentication. The Mobile IDs are authenticated by an access control reader, which delivers the IDs further to an access controller. The access controller makes the decision on granting the access and on further actions.

  • Mobile application

The mobile application stores the Mobile IDs onto a secure storage on the phone.

The application starts the communication with an access control reader when you present the phone to the reader as if the phone were a smart card. In this scenario, the phone must support Near-Field Communication (NFC).

If the phone does not support NFC, you can tap the desired token from the application user interface. When tapped from the user interface, the phone starts to communicate with the reader through Bluetooth LE.

Now, the mobile application delivers the token to the reader, which authenticates the user, and delivers a the valid ID to the access controller.

Access control reader

The access control reader reads the Mobile ID and indicates the status of each authentication by LED indications and sounds, as with physical smart cards.

The reader is configured by the reader manufacturer configuration tools and configuration cards according to the ordinary PACS configuration processes.

Mobile ID service

Mobile IDs are generated in the Mobile ID service and transferred to users' mobile phones.

As the PACS system makes all access decisions, the Mobile ID users must be synchronized with the users in the PACS system. There are several ways to do this:

Mobile ID service for small installations. A batch export/import method for older PACS systems, which do not support Application Programming Interfaces (API). API calls
